How National Education?

The challenge for National Education is to reach out to a new generation of Singaporeans. This generation is more well-travelled and globally aware than ever before. It is important to strengthen their sense of belonging to Singapore by engaging both their intellect and their emotions.

This is a generation that has been weaned on rapid advancements in technology. Multi-sensory multi-media games, toys and gadgets are the order of the day. This generation is drawn to creative, lively, sophisticated and yet subtle packaging.

This generation is better-educated and more independent-minded. They are less likely to tolerate being "preached to" and may be turned off if they perceive that something is irrelevant to them or boring. But they will welcome opportunities for greater interaction and learning if they perceive it as something important to them.

Engage the new generation
National Education is a vast field. There is a lot potential for National Education to be engaging and fun. It deals with current affairs and “hot topics” of the day and is a platform to discuss, debate and express ideas and opinions. Whether it is carried out in a classroom, an auditorium, through an exhibition, tour, game or carnival, National Education must engage hearts and minds. A well-designed National Education programme should lead to greater appreciation of National Education issues and greater personal commitment towards making a contribution to our society.
